ServiceNow Discovery: Credential Requirements

ServiceNow Discovery: Credential Requirements

Introduction

Credentials, as we know, is the pre-cursor to ServiceNow Discovery.

As a member of the implementation team, we expect these to be available right away, but it’s natural for the owners of these ‘keys’ to be concerned. And their concern is well placed.

After all, these are credentials. And for that reason, questioning the credibility of storing and managing credentials in ServiceNow is a part of the job… and it should be!

But, everybody is on the same team. And as I had deeper conversations about this topic, the real questions were around…

…understanding the true requirements for the credentials and being educated on the nuances of what is needed for ServiceNow Discovery to work.

I have been on numerous calls and exchanged more than my share of emails about this topic. But peeling all the layers, these links below are what everyone is really looking to align on.

Credential Requirements

I have grouped the links below, based on the ServiceNow Release. Select the links corresponding to your specific release for the most accurate requirements.

Yes, there are other credential types, and once you are familiar with the links below, the other requirements are easy to navigate to on the ServiceNow Docs. I wanted to keep this list limited to address the common credential conversations most customers have.

Feel free to bookmark and share this article to help with the conversations supporting your Credential Requirements.

Conclusion

Collecting credentials is often looked upon as an administrative activity, something that must be done quickly and indifferently.

However, in my opinion, it should be looked upon as an educational opportunity. Start early and give it the time it needs to make sure everyone is on the same page.

It is the first handshake of trust that the owners of the Configuration Items are providing to the ServiceNow Platform and the ServiceNow Support Team. This is the best opportunity for everyone to learn about and understand the limitations at either end, so we can take the first step to successfully implementing ServiceNow Discovery.
