CMDB Design

The CMDB Design spreadsheet captures existing CI Types in the CMDB and provides the supporting CMDB Design for the scoped CI Types.

The sections below detail the columns in this spreadsheet, their definitions and suggestion on how to filter the spreadsheet to optimize its consumption.

Note: Based on the deliverables and scope, all customers may not see all the columns (detailed below) of the spreadsheet. However, this page is meant to be a guideline to help you understand how to leverage the scoped columns.

CI ClassTop

Definition:
This column captures the CI Classes scoped for the CMDB Design effort and corresponds to the granularity of data captured within the organization.

Applying Filters:
Filtering a subset of CI Types displays only the rows corresponding to the selected CI Types.



CI AttributeTop

Definition:
This column captures CI Attributes corresponding to scoped CI Classes. (The value 'TABLE DEFINITION' represents the entry corresponding to the CI Class.

Applying Filters:
Filtering on the 'TABLE DEFINITION', is a quick way to view all the CI Classes in scope. Additionally, filtering on any value of the CI Attribute helps identify common attributes across different CI Classes allowing for supporting analysis required for CI Attribute Standardization.



Database AttributeTop

Definition:
This column captures Table Name and Attribute Name of the CI Attribute, as captured, physically in the ServiceNow CMDB Database. The nomenclature also takes into account the hierarchical structure of the ServiceNow CMDB Database for immediate identification of which Table in the hierarchy an attribute belongs.

Applying Filters:
Filtering on 'u_' is an immediate way to to identify custom attributes created in ServiceNow. Additionally, filtering on a specific Table Name, helps identify the potential impact of the Attribute in the ServiceNow CMDB Database Hierarchy.



Attribute TypeTop

Definition:
This column captures the Data Type of the Attribute.

Applying Filters:
Filtering on any value provides a quick insight into the supporting Data Types and the number of Attributes corresponding to these Data Types. Additionally, it helps identify the counts for these Data Types across the whole CMDB or specific to a set of filtered CI Classes.



Attribute Type DetailsTop

Definition:
This column captures additional details supporting the Data Type of the Attribute. Additional information of the Data Type includes, but is not limited to Field Length, Referenced Table, Units, Values in the Choice List, etc.

Applying Filters:
Filtering on any value provides a quick insight into further grouping similar Data Types. For example, identifying all Tables in the CMDB that reference the 'User' Table.



Attribute HintTop

Definition:
This column captures additional details for that specific Attribute in free-form text.

Applying Filters:
Applying a 'contains' filter on this column is a quick way to isolate or highlight Attributes in the CMDB that can't easily be grouped leveraging any other column.



Attribute SubcategoryTop

Definition:
This column has one of the three values: Manual (M), Discovered (D), Calculated (C).
Manual Attributes are manually entered and should be minimized and set to Mandatory.
Discovered Attributes are auto-populated via ServiceNow Discovery or via 3rd Party Discovery Solutions (using Integration). These Attributes should be set to ReadOnly.
Calculated Attributes are derived from other attributes and should be set to ReadOnly. Manual Attributes should be assessed to identify if they can be converted to Calculated Attributes.

Applying Filters:
Filtering on this column gives an immediate insight into the counts for these Attribute Groupings across the whole CMDB or specific to a set of filtered CI Classes.



MandatoryTop

Definition:
This column captures in an attribute is Mandatory or ReadOnly.

Applying Filters:
Filtering on this column provides a quick overview of the columns that meet these criteria. We recommend maximizing the number of Mandatory and ReadOnly attributes and minimizing non-Mandatory attributes.



Data Population CountTop

Definition:
This column captures, for each Attribute, the number of records in the CMDB that contain valid data for this Attribute.

Applying Filters:
Filtering this column on value '0' provides immediate insight into Attributes scoped in the CMDB with no valid data.



Data Population PercentageTop

Definition:
This column captures, for each Attribute, the percentage of records in the CMDB that contain valid data for this Attribute.

Applying Filters:
Filtering this column on value helps identify Attributes that are sparsely populated and potential candidates for de-scoping from the CMDB.



Data Population TimestampTop

Definition:
This column captures when the Data Population Count was captured.

Applying Filters:
Filtering on this column provides insight into when the last analysis on the CMDB was done and provides supporting metrics to Baseline the CMDB.



RecommendationTop

Definition:
This column captures a recommendation on what needs to be done with this Attribute based on observations and analysis. The acceptable values for this column are: Keep, Remove, Discard.

Applying Filters:
Filtering on this column provides quick access to attributes during the analysis phase. This column is typically removed from the final deliverable, once the assessment is complete.



RACI MatrixTop

Definition:
This represents one of more columns, corresponding to the Teams within the Organization who interact with the CMDB.

Applying Filters:
Filtering on this column provides immediate insight into which teams are Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed at the granularity of the CI Class and the CI Attribute.
